WIP - Cultists

GW has forced my hand yet again! With all the awesome new Khorne releases, I knew it was only a matter of time before I would start a Khorne Daemonkin army.
And Skarbrand turned out to be the tipping point.

Khornate Cultists - Supposed to be Pit Fighter Gladiators.
And tomorrow is the big day, where Per-Kenneth and I will play our huge 3000pts Nurgle game! As promised, here are the pictures of my cultists I've been re-doing for my Death Guard army.

Nurgle Cultists - only showing 10/20.

Plague Zombies - only showing 10/20

So next week I'll post the full battle report from the game!

Until then.
Cheers!

Random rabblings.

First off: A verrry late Happy New Year!!

After a short x-mas vacation I decided to post my work on my blog, but I have so much on my desk that I just continued painting instead. Finally, I managed to pull my thumb out from my Eye of Terror to bring you the results:

I've been trying out the Forge World weathering powders, and the results was to my satisfaction. I enjoyed working with the powders, and the result, that I just continued painting Blood Angels tanks.
I also built one of my drop pods. painting the parts separately was easier than painting the finished model, but putting it together when painted was difficult. Be warned!

I'm also preparing for the Apocalypse in 2 weeks! Sorting out rations and support to survive the weekend. I made a list in November/December sometime, and started painting what was unpainted. Then a couple of days ago I decided to re-write my list. Shit happens, but I got stuff painted.

The Soul Grinder got icons of Khorne here and there, and I replaced its front legs with the big claws from the defiler set. The Warp Talon in front will act as a Chaos Lord leading the raptors.

Using some spare parts from my Forgefiend, I aim to rebuild my second Soul Grinder to resemble a Maulerfiend. My fiancé pointed out the the right hand looks like its supposed to hold something, so it stands between a weapon or a victim...

The bad plastic glue issue is still haunting me. I had complained about some Blood Angels being affected and I'm getting them replaced as well. I'm also finding several Chaos Marines affected, but I'm done complaining, and just try to repair them. It's a lot of work.

And right now I'm in a mood for painting Blood Angels, but I have vowed to finish the Chaos Marines (at least the ones for the Apocalypse) before I pick up the Blood Angels again. I've barely touched the Traitor Guard...

On another note, rumours tell of Daemons getting a new Codex and Armybook in february, meaning my Greater Daemons probably will get replaced by plastic ones (one can hope), and I will have to add whatever new stuff that's being released.

And that's it for this time. I'm occupied with training and work next week, but I hope I will be able to squeeze in a post someday.

Until next time!
Cheers!

Battle for Kemlik Square

Nearly a week ago I played a game of Apocalypse with a couple of friends. The game was supposed to be a 2 vs 2 game, but my ally got sick the last moment, so I had to pack the double and stand against the Imperium on my own!

I will be posting pictures af the game and writing descriptions of the pictures. If you want the full fiction of the game, head over to the Black Scorpions blog. I really recomend it!

The gaming table in all its glory!

Rik and Rory discuss the deployment, a problem I had to face by myself!
The Black Scorpions, mustered for war!

 The Imperium has deployed...

 ...so has Chaos!

My infantry platoons suffer greatly from the huge walker and trio of dreadnoughts.

A chimera is destroyed, forcing the Diciples of Keraz to disembark.

The autocannon team destroys a rhino, allowing the conscripts to fire at the marines inside.

The Black Scorpions librarian investigates the Warp anomaly in the church.

The infantry of the Warrick 1st rifles advances.

The Black Scorpions claim an objective.

The missile launcher team finally manages to pop a Leman Russ.

The Black Scorpions takes "The Jolly Goblin" claiming another beer objective.

The Daemons arrive to save ruin the day!!

And that's it for this time! A short telling of the game: Turn 1 saw me taking a lot of casualties, without being able to deal much pain back. Turn 2 I had to abandon my 2 objectives and re-deploy using strategic assets and reserves. Turn 3 my Daemons arrived and made the imperium turn their attention towards me. Last turn, turn 4 allowed me to move my daemons, contesting 2 objectives. In the end, we had the Imperium holding 2 objectives, Chaos holding 2, and 2 Blood Thirsters contesting 2 objectives.

A draw, to my surprise....

Next time I'll post a battle report!

Cheers!

Warp Invasion!

I was on my way to Games Workshop Oslo to play a game againts my friend Ludvig, and knowing he would be playing his new Imperial Fist army, I decided to go with Daemons, since I'm kind of tired of Marines VS Marines games.

I just wanted an army that looked cool, I didn't even expect to win, so I went for an all Khorne cohort (try saying that fast several times) with a Soul Grinder for support. This has to be the first time I wiped someone of the table with my Chaos Daemons. The game got me in a good mood, so I decided to dust of my old Daemons.

I got 3 new Bloodcrushers and started to modify my old ones. I will need a squad that's fully upgraded. The Soul Grinder will be replaced by a Blood Slaughterer from Forge World, for good measure ;)

Blood Slaughterer, picture property of Forge World. Used without permission.

Except for the new addition to my Daemons army, I will start a Defenders of Vraks army from Forge World. Instead of Chaos Renegades and Alpha Legion I will be using converted Cadians and Black Legion. The story behind this army wil be an Imperial Guard Army joining the Black Legion out of fear. That way you really get how evil the Chaos Marines really are!

When this army reaches around 2000 pts, I will add a Baneblade and some more Chaos Marines. Toss in some Daemons and I hope I will be able to field a truly impressive Apocalypse army (Yes, I'm all about Apocalypse...)!

So until next time, Cheers!!!

Incoming!

It's about time I update the blog.
Sadly, my flatmate and I are not very satisfied with our internet operator, so we terminated our Internet subscription. This means no more internet for me in a while. So untill we find another operator, I don't know how often I will be able to update the blog.

Currently I'm preparing for a massive Apocalypse game at Games Workshop Oslo this saturday. I've just completed 10 Flesh Hounds of Khorne, except the bases. Theese will be completed in a minute, or day, you know, whatever.

Here's some of the things you can look forward to in 2010:

*Completed Flesh Hound squad
*An'ggrath the unbound, now with two axes!
*Apocalypse Battle report
*40k Campaign Battle reports
*Angron with retinue
*Soul Grinder of Khorne
*Brass Throne of Khorne

Somebody asked me how I paint the Bloodletter swords, so I will try to give a full tutorial on the Bloodletters. I'm just sick of painting them after 4 squads...

I'm very tempted to build a Soul grinder out of a Dreadnought, but for that I have to make up some rules for it, and actually build the thing. Will see how it turns out, have a good evening!

Squad Markings

When you play an army like Chaos Daemons or Tyranids you will find it a bit difficult to separate the units from each other.

Once in my Blood Angels days I charged into close combat with two tactical squads. This was before i had heard anything about squad markings.
It caused a big problem for me when ever I had to make a sweeping advance since I didn't know
witch marine belonged to wich unit.

This wasn't a problem I had for a long time, since Space Marines are easy to separate. One small number on one shoulderpad showed wich unit he belonged to, while the mark on his knee showed wich company he belonged to.

With Chaos Daemons and Tyranids you don't have that kind of squad markings since they don't adorn their armor (or even wear armor).

The easiest way to create squad markings on Bloodletters is to paint them in different techniques, one squad can be washed several times with badab black, one squad can be drybrushed with Blood red.
Although this is the easiest way to separate your squads, I chose another way.

Since I'm going for a "Skulltaker's Cohort of Blood" Formation from the Apocalypse Realod book, I'm going to need 8 units of Bloodletters.

I find this way the best way to mark each unit since I want all my Bloodletters to have the same skin colour.
Now there are three things I use to mark the Bloodletters: The horns, the tounges and the swords.

Look at this picture:

They look very much the same, but if you look closely you notice that some Bloodletters are missing their tounges, while some have bloodstains on their swords.

When sperating the 8 units (I only have 4 so far), I start by dividing them in two major groups, The black horned and the bone coloured horned.
Theese are then divided in 4 separate units (wich can be merged if I play a standard battle).

First we have the standard ones.

The most boring bunch, they have no bloodstained swords and their tounges have been cut off.

Then we have the ones with tounges, and clean swords.

If I want to, i can merge theese two into a unit since the swords will be the easiest to spot.

Then we have the third and fourth unit, wich also can be merged. First out, no tounges but bloodstained swords.

And the last group and most decorated one, tounges and bloodstained swords.

Unit 5-8 will be painted in the same way, but their horns will be painted in a bone colour.
If I want to play a game and use two units with 20 Bloodletters in each unit I can easily spot wich figure belong to wich unit since the first one will have Black horns, and the other bone horns.

The Flesh Hound will be a litte more difficult to separate since they dont have horns or weapons. Hopefully I'll figure it out... Or stop getting hounds :)

I finished sculpting the left hand on Angron, and it didn't quite turn out as I had hopes, but it looks ok.

Finally Finished!

An'ggrath the unbound is now fully finished! It took me about a month to assemble and paint this figure.

I am, unfortunatly, not entirely satisfied with the sword. Now that i see the sword i actually want more of a butcher's cleaver, but that can be fixed. The blade isn't too hard to remove, and I will have to see if I want to remove his current blade. The "Butcher's Cleaver" idea will actually be a part of my army. I'm getting another Bloodthirster (Not Forge World though. One of those will do) and I don't want it to have the Death Strike upgrade. This will be achieved by removing his whip, axe and replace them with two matching cleavers.

The axe turned out ok though. I'm still not sure if the axe should be metal, gold or bone. I went with metal, since this was the biggest contrast I could manage. I could try to blend bone with metal, but this will be a future project, since it wont be so hard to repaint.

The effect I tried to achieve on the base (tiles crushed under the monsters weight) was a total success! Maybe I put to little sand on the base, but then again, that is a minor detail that can easily be changed.

And finally, I'll just show some pictures of An'ggrath with a small cohort of Khorne Daemons.

Imagine the picture below with a burning sky as background. Maybe I will make a Background like that if I have the patience.

And now I actually don't know what my next step will be. I have two units of Bloodletters to paint (and that is boring), one Angron, Primarch of the World Eaters to sculpt and paint, one Skarbrand the Exiled to sculpt and paint, 10 Flesh hounds of Khorne to paint, and I want to buy another Bloodthirster (wich I probably should wait to get). So, since it's december, I work a lot and my motivation to paint sculpt things that I actually was finished with is low, Im not sure if the blog will get updated untill next week. Hopefully I find something to write about this sunday. Until then, Cheers!

Lord of the Bloodthirsters

Not nearly finished, but it's taking form! The skin is finished, the horns are soon finished (they just need a highlight), the armor's finished, and the hair and wings just need a black wash and a highlight. The base remains, as well as all leather straps, sword and axe. I actually need help with the axe. Should I paint it gold, metal or bone? Please leave your oppinion in the comment section below. And for now I'll just shut up and show you the pictures.

Focus: Herald of Khorne

Ever wondered what happened to the Khorne Herald that you get when you buy Uraka the Warfiend? Wonder no more, because I painted it.

Yes, simple as that.

The picture below is actually taken a while ago, when it was still a WIP.

Needless to say, I used the same methods for painting it as I used for the Bloodletters and Uraka. What I really love about this mini is the size of it! It's still a Bloodletter, but larger then the standard ones!

Size does matters!

For the base, I went for the cityfight texture that I use on all my Khorne figures. On the Herald I added some rocks and piles of skulls from the Warhammer Basing Kit.

The blood effect on the corpse, as well as the eyes on the poor victim are two things I'm not completly satisfied with...

That's why I repainted them. Thanks to Alf at Games Workshop Oslo for helping me with the blood effect!

As for the horns, I had completly forgotten to paint them. They looked really good all red, but since I wanted the herald to look more like a big bloodletter (wich, as I said before, it actually is), I decided to paint them in a bone colour.

I guess I stressed this mini a bit, and I totally understand why. I have another mini (although it's huge!) on my desk that I want to paint. Pictures will be up this wednesday!

Focus: Uraka the Warfiend

Today, I'm focusing on one figure I painted recently, but didn't post enough pictures of.
This figure is from Forge World, the Khorne Daemon Prince Uraka the Warfiend.

The base is a solid resin base from a company in poland, wich name I don't remember since I order the bases from a Swedish Company called Game Maniacs who keeps them in stock. I wasn't totally satisfied with the base since it's all skulls, so I covered some spots with fine sand.

I used the same methods for painting the Warfiend as I used when I painted the Bloodletters. I have gotten a lot of compliments for the color scheme from people at Games Workshop Oslo, and I'm also very satisfied with it. Since I used to play Blood Angels a couple of years ago, I got tired of painting Blood Red.

Oh, and from now on I will update the blog twice a week! So, Wednesdays and Sundays I will post some new pictures, tips or tactics! And about The FW Bloodthirster, I decided to swap the whip for a custom made sword. So, yeah!

An'ggrath the Unbound!

I bought the FW Bloodthirster, and got it all prepped up. Now I only have to finish basing it and undercoat it. Here are som WIP pictures. It's freakin' huge!

The picture below shows how I started to green stuff the back. The wings didn't fit at all, so i had to green stuff it first, pin the wings, then green stuff the gaps! Took me a while.

The only thing that hasn't been glued yet is the whip. I dont know how I want it. Do I want it like he is about to whip something, with the whip up, or like he IS whipping something, with the whip pointing forward.

I built the base on a CD, then used two plates from the Warhammer Fantasy Movement Trays set. First I just cut out one layer, then i cut the small squares individually for the second layer. I did this so I could trim the edges to make it look like high quality plates, as if the Bloodthirster was standing in a room of a ruined city. Around the hooves I only put one layer of plates to give the impression of the Bloodthirster landing on the floor, and his weight crushing the expensive tiles. This will be improved with small plate bits and sand.

And at last, a picture showing the green stuff finishes on the back, to cover the gap between the wings and the body. Untill next time!

Cheers!
